This idea wass the result of an article published in the Red Deer Advocate in early 2009 it read…

In April, 842 adults came in for food, compared with 410 adults in April 2008. Executive director Fred Scaife said he’s never before seen such a huge increase in demand. “This being our 25th year, I’ve reviewed a lot of stats. I’ve never seen 105 per cent increase,” Scaife said. The recession has also hit the food bank hard and resources are being stretched, Scaife said. “We’re making some adjustments to make sure our food supplies will last as long as they can. This is a tough time for us.” All around the province local food banks are reporting major increases in usage and major shortfalls in supplies.  

We can all do our small part to help out our great community, after all that’s what makes Red Deer such a great place to live; it really is a small town big city. It’s with this in mind we’re designating Tuesday, October 5, 2010 as the 2nd Annual Food For Fitness day!

Massage therapy is a very important aspect of your personal health and fitness program. Experts estimate that as much as 90% of disease is related to the effects of stress. (Physiological, physical and emotional) When combined with exercise and balanced consistent nutrition massage therapy can have a very dramatic effect on the reduction of stress of all kinds. Additionally, it has been well documented that specific physiological and chemical changes occur within the body following a massage treatment.

A strong synergism also exists between exercise, massage and FIR therapy in the rebuilding of injured tissue. This is accomplished by having a positive effect on the fibroblasts (connective tissue cells necessary for the repair of injury). Furthermore, it increases growth of cells, DNA syntheses, and protein synthesis all necessary during tissue repair and regeneration. Excellent for healing burns, scar tissue and skin problems.

By stimulating increased production of white blood cells (leukocytes), Far Infrared strengthens the Immune system with its direct effect on the bone marrow and killer T-cells of the thymus.

Tammy Cunnington – International Wheelchair Athlete

Tamrace1 300x184 Tammy Cunnington   International Wheelchair AthleteTammy Cunnington is an international wheelchair athlete competing in triathlons and handcycle racing.  She was injured when she was six years old in an incredible accident where she was actually hit by an airplane! Tammy also downhill sit-skis, kayaks, boxes and participates in any other sport or activity that she can try, showing that the only impossibilities are the ones we create for ourselves.  By sharing her story she wishes to remind others that any obstacle can be overcome with some hard work and that the benefits are 100% worth it every single time!

Tamrace2 Tammy Cunnington   International Wheelchair Athlete“I began training at One-1-Fitness in the spring of 2008.  At this point I had been training on my own for a few years and competing in sprint distances races but I was not improving.  Every year was the same thing, my speeds were the same, I could only lift the same weight, and my overall fitness was the same.  I turned to One-1-Fitness for help.  The team there has been super supportive and hugely helpful to me.  With the work they put me through I was finally able to achieve my goal of jumping from sprint distance to Olympic distance.  Up until joining One-1-Fitness this goal had eluded me.  The best part is that not only can I compete in an Olympic distance triathlon I can do it without suffering or struggling, I can finish strong.  My strength has increased so much and now I can climb almost any hill on my hand cycle.  In the past I could only register in races that were relatively flat because I was afraid I would not be able to climb the hills.  Now, I actively seek hills to train on to see if I can climb them and I find flat races to be unchallenging.  The strength increase has also really improved my skiing ability, now I actually downhill ski rather than downhill crash.  My injury rate has decreased and my km/hr has increased.  The strong work ethic and positive attitude of the team at One-1-Fitness has helped me reach my goals and I know they will continue to help me achieve the even tougher goals I have set for the future.”

My mother always said I should aim high and reach for new heights; this might not have been what she had in mind…

It`s hard to believe that in just six weeks from now I will leave everything familiar behind and embark on what will undoubtedly be one of the greatest adventures I`ve ever experienced. I will travel half way around the world, I will truly been an outsider, if that alone isn`t enough I will join a small team of committed individuals I`ve never met on a six day trek through jungle, desert, snow and ice. We will walk 100 kilometres, experience a 50 degree temperature change and climb to nearly 6000 metres. A daunting task for a guy who hasn`t slept in a tent for nearly a decade, never been in a sleeping bag below zero, and has no idea what it`s like to hike for miles or what oxygen deprivation is like. To say that I am intimidated by this coming experience and uncomfortable about not knowing what to expect is an understatement. Those fears however, pale in comparison to what it must be like to live each day with real fears of death and disease from things like typhoid, cholera, and E. Coli. These forms of illness are practically unimaginable for you and I. Or to think of how laborious it must be to carry water for miles every day for your family. Maybe on summit day the effects of high elevation will allow me to relate as I carry my 30lb, ergonomically designed to fit totally comfortable, day pack up those final steps, but then probably not really.

On March 1, 2010 my adventure begins. As a member of a 30 person team I will trek up the slopes of mount Kilimanjaro, Africa`s tallest peak. Collectively we will face this challenge in tribute to those that live with real fears and even more real daily challenges to maintain the most basic quality of life. Hopefully by now you are both fascinated and curious why myself, and 29 others like me, would travel half way around the globe to participate in something they never dreamed of doing. As it was with that same curiosity that One-to-1 Fitness client and local climb participant Glenn Moore inspired me to join this adventure and raised my awareness to an organization called The Water School. 

The Water School is a Canadian based organization that has a mission to share a very amazingly simple, inexpensive, and practical method of providing safe, clean water for the developing world. SODIS is a method of solar disinfection that requires only a simple plastic bottle, a piece of tin and some sunshine. Simple items that we throw in the garbage every single day can completely change the life of 100s, 1000s, likely millions. Living in Red Deer it`s difficult to imagine having to walk to Innisfail to fetch a pail of hopefully clean drinking water from a basic well each day, in fact just imagine going 24 hours without being able to turn on a faucet of any kind or flush a toilet, our way of life would seemingly cease to exist.
